TechSport Looking Strong at Season Intermission

As the halfway point of the season is upon us already, TechSport racing drivers have been setting a blistering pace thus far. The teams TCB drivers Canaan O’Connell and P.J. Groenke are on a roll with both having finished five of the six races on the podium.

Canaan, having started off the season in the best way possible with a victory in race 1 at Virginia International raceway has been the class of the field ad would have a healthy lead in the championship without a penalty in round 3 in Canada. However, it likely won’t be long until he is back atop the standings. The young O’Connell scored maximum points at the recent Lime Rock Park event scoring both wins and poles to close in on The Championship. “The season has been great so far! The Techsport Chevy sonic has been on rails and I look forward to continue rewarding the team for their hard work,” says Canaan.

P.J. is close and hunting down the leader as well. Currently second in points on the strength of 5 podiums, Groenke has his head down and eyes on the prize. In fact, P.J. had his own misfortune in Canada after celebrating the win in round 3, it was declared after the race that an untimely red flag would reverse the results to the previous green flag lap. A truly heartbreaking scenario for P.J. as it would have been his first win in the series. “First of All, a huge thank you to Techsport and my sponsors. We have a really, really good car and I am going to be pushing as hard as I can the rest of the season to be up front and get some more wins. It’s a shame my first win didn’t count but that’s how it is and I am more motivated than ever.”

In the TCA class, Eric Powell’s #23 Mazda Mx-5 has been strong. Kevin Anderson on a development path driving the new Toyota 86 platform has been improving the car at each event. Powell was able to finish on the podium in 3rd place in round 1 at VIR and capped off round 5 at Lime Rock with a brilliant 2nd place effort. “Definitely not the season we were hoping for so far in TCA. However, I am super happy to be out here with one of the best teams in the business and we are working on a different plan as we speak for the second half of the season to see what we can accomplish towards the goal of having the new platform contend for the championship in 2018. I believe we will be able to shake things up a bit for sure.”- Says Powell

As development of the Toyota Platform has continued, look for TechSport racing to replace the aging Mazda Mx-5’s with a fleet of Toyotas. “Eric and I have been testing the new car in addition to me driving it in the races. It is definitely getting there and should be a very competitive package very soon.” Says Team Principal, Kevin Anderson
