Aschenbach, Gaples retain GTS and GTSA points leads

ELKHART LAKE, Wisconsin – It was another successful outing for Blackdog Speed Shop’s Lawson Aschenbach on Sunday with a second consecutive runner-up finish in the Pirelli World Challenge GTS class at Road America.

Aschenbach, driving the No. 10 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R, extended his Driver’s Championship lead with his sixth second-place showing in 10 races this year. He also finished second in Saturday’s first GTS race of the weekend.

“It’s never a bad weekend when you grab two more runner-up finishes,” Aschenbach said. “It would have been nice to get the first win of the year for Blackdog Speed Shop and the new Chevy Camaro GT4.R, but it will come. I fought as hard as I could to keep pace with Ian, but it was clear he was just managing the gap. The Camaro GT4.R was on rails and I could really push and be aggressive. We just came up short today, but our day is coming. The championship is the goal, and we are doing what we need to do every weekend. On to Mid-Ohio!”

Aschenbach began fourth and picked up one position from the standing start into the first corner. Following a restart from the first of three full-course caution periods, Aschenbach made a strong move under braking at the end of the long backstretch to move into the second position.

Tony Gaples placed fifth in the GTSA category behind the wheel of his No. 11 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R. The veteran driver began 17th in the overall GTS order but moved up three spots on the opening lap. He drove a measured race from that point despite a number of close calls for cars who were mired around him in traffic. At the end of the day, it was another clean run for the GTSA Driver’s Championship leader.

“I hoped we would have had a better day for our Blackdog Speed Shop friends and fans who made the trip to Road America,” Gaples said. “Traffic around me was crazy, particularly on the restarts. There were a couple of moments late where I had a chance to move up but had to get on the brakes early because of the chaos. That goes down to the wide ranges of performances in the GTS cars. Having said that, it was a blast driving the Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R around Road America. There isn’t another track where I get as much joy going around in a really, really great car like this new Camaro.”

The results for Aschenbach and Gaples solidified Blackdog Speed Shop’s lead in the GTS and GTSA Team championships and Chevrolet’s advantage in Manufacturer’s points.

Blackdog Speed Shop will now prepare for the next Pirelli World Challenge event at Mid-Ohio SportsCar Course on July 28-30. CBS Sports Network will air GTS action from Road America at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday, July 5.
