Tooele, Utah – After more than a month off, BERG Racing resumes its professional motorsport program with rounds seven and eight of the 2017 Pirelli World Challenge Championships.
Sitting third in teams’ points, BERG Racing team owner John Weisberg reflects on the halfway point of a so far up-and-down season.
“We’ve had a decent season so far,” said Weisberg. “We’ve shown the performance of the Audi RS 3 LMS USA Clubsport, and have continued working with our Mazda MX-5. We’ve had a great race at Utah Motorsports Campus last year, so we’re quite eager to return.”
Unfortunately, Weisberg’s TC win will be impossible to repeat in 2017.
“Sadly, we discovered technical issue on the #5 REDCOM Laboratories MX-5 during the first test session on Thursday,” said Weisberg. “We have spare components on site, but of a slightly different spec, requiring more time than necessary to replace. Therefore, we’ll assemble the components on-site, and prepare it fully back home in Rochester, in anticipation of the next round.”
“We were right on pace last year, and capitalized on the leaders losing a touch of time from close, hard racing in the final turns,” added Weisberg. “It’s unfortunate we can’t defend last year’s win here, but we’ll regroup and be ready for Circuit of the Americas with two BERG Racing / REDCOM racecars.”
REDCOM Laboratories, despite being down to a single-car entry this weekend, is still represented well in the 32-car deep Touring Car field.
“While it’s unfortunate that we don’t have the entire team competing at this event, I’m very proud to have REDCOM Laboratories represented by the very capable JT Coupal. I wish JT the best of luck this weekend in the #009 Micro Precision Components / REDCOM Laboratories Audi,” said Dinah Weisberg, President, REDCOM Laboratories, Inc.
Meanwhile, John Weisberg believes the Audi RS 3 LMS should be near the front of TC, considering the location of the next TC round.
“Obviously, the MPC Audi should be toward the front in TC, as forced-induction cars will lose the least considering the high altitude of Utah Motorsports Campus,” said Weisberg. “We had a productive promoter test session on Thursday, and a good Friday, so we’re well prepared.”
Sitting third in drivers’ points, BERG Racing team driver Jason Coupal is equally optimistic ahead of his UMC debut.
“I’m really looking forward to getting back to Pirelli World Challenge racing,” said Coupal. “I’m currently third in points, and can’t wait to get back to on-track action. I’ll try my best to chase down the leaders in my Micro Precision Components Audi RS 3 LMS!”
Despite the summer break, Coupal has kept busy over the last month.
“I had the pleasure of contesting two endurance races in Italy over the break,” said Coupal. “We ran in the 12 Hours of Imola and the 24 Hours of Misano, the former of which was in an Audi RS 3 LMS TCR. I had some great seat time in the car at Imola, and look forward to debuting at Utah Motorsports Campus in the MPC Audi!”
