Goulart, O’Connell Record TCA/TCB Wins in Rd.5

Goulart Scores 2nd Win of the LRP Weekend so far

LAKEVILLE, Conn. – From the pole position, Elivan Goulart led flag-to-flag to win the TCA race on Saturday morning at the Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of Lime Rock Park. Canaan O’Connell pulled off a similar performance in TCB, taking the victory on the first race of the day.

For Goulart, driving the S.A.C. Racing Mazda Global MX-5 Cup Car, it was the second win of the weekend as the 2016 TCA Champion also scored the TC win in his class debut on Friday in No. 70 Krugsport Lotus.

“We had a good start and (Dean) Copeland behind me went deep into turn one and got into my car,” said Goulart, who is a local resident, hailing from Shelton, Connecticut. “After that I tried to maintain my gap and hold the margin as best as possible. The S.A.C. Racing team did a phenomenal job with the car. Getting a second win this weekend on home turf is awesome. The Lotus (TC car) and Mazda (TCA) are similar cars and I can drive them very much the same. You try to get as much out of each car as possible. So far so good on balance the two cars and the four races. I’ll let you know at the end of the day.”

A tight race for second place in TCA featured Tom O’Gorman and Eric Powell battling in the late going of the race, with O’Gorman suffering an issue that dropped him down the order with just over three minutes to go in the No. 94 Shea Racing Honda Civic Si. O’Gorman would finish 10th after an unscheduled visit to pit road.

Powell finished second in the Tech Sport Racing Mazda MX-5.

Despite an early race spin, Matthew Fassnacht recovered to complete the TCA podium in another S.A.C. Racing entry, the No. 74 Global MX-5 Cup Car.

After charging to second on the opening lap, Dean Copeland finished fourth in the Copeland Motorsports Mazda Global MX-5 Cup Car.

His Copeland Motorsports’ teammate Brian Henderson completed the TCA top five.

In TCB, Canaan O’Connell gapped the field to pull off a victory in the No. 24 Tech Sport Racing Chevrolet Sonic.

“I have always this place on television and though it would be so cool to race at Lime Rock ,” said O’Connell, son of four-time PWC GT champion Johnny O’Connell. “It’s just a roller coaster for a track and reminds me of the track I run every day at the Bondurant Racing School in Arizona (where O’Connell is an instructor). Both tracks are very busy and the car is never really balanced. The high speeds and the elevation changes agree with my driving style. Jake (Pipal) tried to get me on the inside one time and I held my line. After that I was just being consistent.”

Action was intense in the TCB pack, with Jake Pipal triumphing for second place honors in the No. 6 Honda Fit. The No. 25 Tech Sport Racing Chevrolet Sonic of P.J. Groenke completed the TCB podium.

All results are provisional until complete Stewards review and technical inspection.

It’s a busy day at Lime Rock Park for TCA and TCB competitors, who have their second and final race of the day scheduled for 4:10 p.m. local time.
